Breakdown

Mtn Smash Go is a Cover 2 beater out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk that pairs a vertical go route on the backside with a classic smash concept to the trio side. Pre snap motion brings the inside receiver in tight before the ball is snapped, setting up a corner route from the outside receiver stacked over a shallow flat route from the tight end, while the frontside slot runs a quick out underneath. The primary read starts with the backside go route to test single high or blown coverage, then progresses to the smash combo, working the corner route against the deep half safety before checking down to the flat route if the corner sits on the smash.

Defensive Reads

Identify the deep safety alignment before the snap, Cover 2 shells with two safeties split are the primary target for the smash corner route sitting between the levels. Watch the corner assigned to the smash side, if he sinks with the corner route the flat route underneath will be wide open for an easy completion. Track the backside cornerback on the go route, if he turns his hips early or bails into a deep zone drop that signals zone coverage and the go route becomes a lower priority read. Key the flat defender, if a linebacker or nickel widens quickly to cover the flat route that usually means the corner route has single coverage against the safety. Beware of user controlled safeties sitting in the smash window or disguised Cover 3 rotations, a hard roll to one high safety after the snap can take away both the go route and the corner route, forcing an immediate check to the flat.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties this play is designed to attack the seam between the corner and safety on the smash side. Use the pre snap motion to identify man versus zone, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a run after catch matchup advantage on the flat route. Take the backside go route shot on early downs when the defense shows single high or if the corner is playing tight man with no safety help over the top. On third and medium situations lean on the smash concept, the corner route naturally clears out the flat defender for the underneath route. Pair this play with Curls Combo or Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between high low smash reads and quick game combinations, forcing linebackers to declare their drops before you diagnose the corner route window.
