Breakdown
Deep Out lines up from Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk with a trio bunch to one side and an isolated receiver to the weak side. The lone WR runs a deep comeback breaking back to the sideline while the outside trio receiver fires a hard flat/out route and the middle trio man works a deep out that clears the intermediate zone behind him, with the third trio receiver running a corner-breaking wheel up the seam. This is a zone beater built around high low stretching the boundary corner and flat defender, and the primary read progression starts with the deep out on the trio side, works down to the flat route underneath it, and comes back to the backside comeback if the zone rotates hard to the trips look.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap identify if the defense shows two high safeties, which signals soft zone underneath that the deep out can exploit before the safety rotates over Watch the flat defender on the trio side, if he sinks too deep on the flat route the underneath route becomes an easy pitch and catch Key the boundary corner's depth against the backside comeback, a corner playing off coverage invites an easy completion on the break Post snap track any user controlled defender flashing down into the deep out lane since a smart user will sit on that route and bait the quarterback into a turnover This play struggles against press man across the board or a Cover 3 shell with a fast flowing linebacker who can wall off the deep out before it develops
Usage Tips
Check the deep half safety alignment before the snap because this play thrives against two high shells that leave the flat and deep out lane soft on the trio side
If the corner over the outside trio receiver is playing tight man, hot route that receiver into a slant or quick in to beat him off the line before the out route can develop
Use this on second and long or third and medium since the deep out needs a few extra beats to clear underneath zone defenders
Pair Deep Out with Slants or Quick Unders from this same set to condition the defense to sit on short routes, then hit the deep out over the top once linebackers start jumping underneath
Against man coverage look immediately to the backside comeback since it naturally creates separation off the break against a trailing corner
