DBL Ins is a trips based dropback passing concept out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk that isolates the backside X receiver on a deep vertical while the trio side stacks two in breaking routes underneath a dig. The backside receiver runs a go up the sideline to hold the deep half, the inside slot from the trips runs a deep in that settles across the middle, and the outside trips receiver runs a deeper in behind it, creating a natural high low double ins combo. The HB releases out of the backfield on a wheel or flare to the boundary to give the quarterback a checkdown and hold the flat defender, making this primarily a man beater that stresses linebackers and nickel defenders forced to cross face on the in breaking routes. Primary read progression starts with the shallower in route, works to the deeper in route behind it, then bails to the backside go or the HB release if both ins are covered.
Key the middle linebacker and nickel defender at the snap, if they run flat footed and turn their hips to run with the ins you are in man coverage and the double in stack will pull them out of position. Watch the deep safety rotation, a single high safety who bites on the shallow in route opens up the backside go for an explosive gain. In zone coverage looks, identify the flat defender assigned to the HB release, if he sinks too deep to help on the ins the checkdown is wide open underneath. Disguised blitzes with the nickel crashing off the edge take away the quarterback's time to work through the double in progression, so a hot route to the HB or a quick trigger to the shallow in is essential. Cover 2 with two deep safeties can squeeze the deeper in route into the hole defender, so the quarterback needs to see the underneath linebacker's drop before committing to the second in.
Look for single high safety shells before the snap since the double ins concept thrives against Cover 1 and Cover 3 where linebackers have to run with receivers crossing the middle of the field.
Use the backside go route as a hot read against Cover 0 or all out blitzes because the deep threat can turn into a one on one shot play if the defense sends extra rushers.
Motion the HB into a route adjustment or check his release path if you see a blitz look, since he is your outlet against zone drops and man coverage that jumps the ins.
Call this on second and medium to second and long, and third and short to medium, since the sit down in routes give the quarterback a quick answer against zone shells while still threatening intermediate depth.
Pair DBL Ins with Slot Cross or Double Drags in the same set to keep the defense guessing between crossing routes and stacked in cuts, then mix in Deep In or Corner Strike to punish defenders who start jumping the shorter in route.
