HB Sweep out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk is a designed edge run play that pulls the offensive line to seal the perimeter while the HB takes a lateral handoff and presses the edge. The diagram shows the RB starting behind the QB then bending the path outward toward the sideline, following the pulling linemen for a wide edge attack rather than a north-south hit. This is a pure run play with no route concept attached, designed to beat gap-heavy fronts and overaggressive interior defensive lines that get washed out of position. The primary read is the edge: bounce outside if the alley opens, or cut it up behind the pulling blockers if the edge defender squeezes down.
Key the edge defender first. If he crashes down hard on the pull, be ready to bounce the run outside with the user-controlled defender. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. Linebackers sitting too far inside or in the box get gashed once the pullers reach the second level. Identify if the defense is in a run blitz or gap-control front. Heavy blitz packages with linebackers shooting gaps get outrun to the sideline by this concept. Set the edge with your defensive end or outside linebacker and do not let him get reached by the puller, this is the single biggest factor in shutting the play down. Spy or flow a safety down into the alley pre-snap if you suspect sweep, since an unblocked defender in the alley forces the HB to cut it back into traffic.
Call this out of Shotgun on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep defenses honest against your pass-heavy Y Off Trio Wk concepts like Four Verticals and Dagger X Out.
Check the defensive front pre-snap. If you see a 4-3 Under or heavy interior stack, the sweep has a clean lane once the pullers get to the edge.
Use motion or a pre-snap shift if available to identify if the defense is running with your HB, which tells you whether you are facing man or zone principles up front.
Pair this play with HB Mid Draw and Inside Zone in your call sheet so the defense cannot sit on outside runs, forcing linebackers to respect both the edge and the interior.
Mix in Buck Sweep as a changeup since both plays attack the perimeter but hit slightly different landmarks, keeping edge defenders guessing on their run fits.
