Y Lead Read Option lines up out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk with a trio of receivers to one side and a lead blocker in the backfield, showing a true zone read run design rather than a play-action or screen concept. The offensive line blocks down for inside zone while the QB reads the play side defensive end: keep it himself on the edge if the end crashes down, or hand it off to the RB for the inside zone lane if the end sits wide. This is a run-first play built to beat overaggressive zone and man fronts by forcing an unblocked defender to guess wrong, with the primary read being the backside DE's crash-or-contain decision off the snap.
Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap, this is the exact defender the QB is reading, so as a defender you want to show one gap and then flow to the other post-snap to disguise your intent. Stacked or bubbled linebackers signal a run blitz look that can beat this if they fill fast, but if they are two-gapping and reading, the cutback lane stays open for the RB. Man coverage on the perimeter receivers means fewer underneath defenders to help in the run fit, so user your DE or edge defender manually to squeeze the mesh point. Zone shells with safeties sitting deep are vulnerable to this run because it does not stress the deep field, so look for a light box and crash down with a linebacker spy on the QB keep. If the CPU or opposing user overcommits the safety to run support immediately after snap, that is a tell they are keying this play, so mix in the RPO options from this set to punish that aggression.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box.
Use the QB read mechanic deliberately, do not just force the handoff every time, actually let the end declare so you get the free yardage on the keep.
This works best on early downs (1st and 2nd) when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of loading up with extra DBs.
Pair this with Orbit RPO Buck Swing or Power Read from the same set so the defense cannot key on your run action without opening up quick perimeter throws.
If the defense starts crashing hard on every snap to stop the dive, pull the ball more often on the keep and pitch outside for explosive gains.
Sprinkle in Inside Zone or HB Base from this playbook to keep linebackers honest on downhill fits before coming back to this read look.
