Breakdown

HB Base is a straightforward dive run out of the Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk formation, designed to hit the interior gaps behind a downhill blocking scheme. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking straight ahead with the fullback or lead blocker sealing the point of attack, while the HB takes the handoff and presses the read arrow into the A or B gap. This is a pure run play with no route combo attached, so the primary read progression is entirely on the offensive line: identify the first crease, press it hard, and cut off the blocks of your linemen at the second level.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth pre-snap. Linebackers stacked tight to the line signal a run blitz that can blow up the dive before it develops. Check for a light box (five defenders or fewer) which indicates the defense is playing pass-heavy coverage shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, both of which this dive can exploit for easy yardage. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles' gap discipline. If they're two-gapping and reading the mesh point, expect the hole to close quickly and be ready to bounce outside. User-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side pre-snap often mean the defense has scouted the tendency, so mix in play-action from this same formation to keep them honest. A safety creeping down into the box pre-snap is a strong indicator of a run blitz or eight-man front, which neutralizes this play unless you can audible to a quick pass concept.

Usage Tips

Run this out of neutral personnel counts to keep defenses honest, especially early in drives when the defense hasn't committed to stacking the box.

Check the defensive front pre-snap. If you see six or more defenders in the box, consider audibling to a play-action pass like Orbit PA Cross or PA Post Dig Shot from the same set to punish overcommitment.

Use manual control on the HB post-handoff to make one cut and hit the hole with speed rather than dancing behind the line, since Madden run blocking rewards downhill decisiveness.

Pair this dive with HB Sweep and Buck Sweep from the same set to keep linebackers guessing between inside and outside run gaps.

Best used on early downs (first and ten, second and short) to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action shots later in the series.
