Breakdown

Orbit RPO Buck Swing pairs an inside zone run with an orbit motion man swinging out of the backfield for a built-in RPO read. The orbit motion RB releases to the flat while the QB reads the second level defenders (usually the play side linebacker or a crashing safety) to decide between handing off on the zone run or pulling and flipping it to the swing man in space. This is a run heavy RPO designed to punish linebackers who bite on run flow, and it also functions as a light zone beater since the swing route attacks the void left by flowing zone defenders.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a run blitz look with linebackers crashed downhill, since that immediately signals a pull and throw to the swing man. Check safety depth, a single high safety cheating toward the box tells you the defense is selling out on the run and the flat should be open all game. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker or the flat defender in zone coverage, if he stays home on the swing route or sinks into the throwing lane, stick with the handoff instead of forcing the RPO. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the swing route or sitting the flat, that is the biggest counter to this concept and means you need to trust the interior run blocking. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells where the flat defender stays patient, since those coverages take away the easy RPO throw and force you into a straight run read.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap, if you have a numbers advantage in the run front let the zone run play out and take the handoff. Watch the play side linebacker at the snap, if he sits or flows hard toward the line immediately pull and throw the swing route for an easy access completion. This play works best on early downs (first and second and short to medium) since it keeps the offense balanced and does not put you behind schedule if the RPO paint is not there. Pair this call with Orbit PA Cross or RPO Alert Orbit later in a series so the defense sees the same orbit motion look but has to respect a deeper shot off the same action. Against aggressive man blitz teams, hot route the backside slot into a quick out or hitch so you have a answer if the defense sends extra rushers and the swing read gets taken away.
