Breakdown

Slants out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk sends the trio side (three receivers stacked to the weak side) into a layered slant combo: the outside receiver runs a deep slant across the field, the middle receiver breaks off a quick slant underneath, and the inside slot receiver runs a short flat/drag route to clear the underneath zone. On the backside, the lone receiver runs a deep slant that crosses the field opposite the trio, giving you a two level crossing concept with a built in checkdown to the flat. This is a man beater at its core, the natural picks created by the stacked trio release create instant separation against man coverage, while the two crossing slants stress hook zones for zone defenses that don't rotate quickly. Primary read progression starts backside on the deep crossing slant, then works to the trio side working from the deepest slant down to the flat route as the checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Watch for man coverage indicators like corners playing inside shade or bump technique on the trio receivers, this play is designed to exploit that with natural picks from the stacked release. Key the middle linebacker's depth at the snap, if he sits shallow he can undercut the crossing slants, if he bails into a deep drop the shallow slant window opens immediately. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone or spying the quarterback, that defender can jump the underdneath slant or the flat route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 3 zone drops with a hard flat defender can clog the trio side flat route, forcing the quarterback to rely on the backside deep slant instead. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers off the edge can beat this play before the crossing routes develop, so check protection or plan to get the ball out on time to the first available slant.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone based on corner alignment on the backside single receiver, tight coverage with no cushion signals man and you should lean on the backside slant winning immediately off the release.

If the defense shows two high safeties with soft corners, expect zone and work the crossing slants into the hook zones, hitting the receiver right as he clears the second level linebacker.

Use the flat route on the trio side as your answer to underneath zone drops or when you see a linebacker spying the middle, it is a safe checkdown that still picks up yards after catch.

This play pairs well with Double Drags and Slot Cross from the same set since the initial release looks identical, forcing defenders to bite on route recognition before the ball is thrown, then punishing them with Slants for a quick strike.

Best used on early downs or third and short to medium since the quick breaking slants get the ball out fast and beat blitzes before pressure arrives, avoid calling this into heavy zone blitz packages that clog the shallow crossing lanes.
