SFT Mtn Stack Salem Y-Out is a trips-based passing concept out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk with motion sent across the formation before the snap. The backside X runs a deep vertical shot up the numbers while the trips side stacks an out breaking route to the flat, a deep comeback breaking toward the sideline, and the Y running a corner style route that bends back underneath toward the boundary off a return move near the line. The blocking assignment keeps the RB in to help protect while the QB works from the deep shot to the boundary comeback, then progresses to the underneath out and the returning Y route, making this a man beater built to create natural picks and separation against tight coverage.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, if both safeties are deep and showing two high shells the deep shot route will be tightly covered and you should progress quickly to the shorter routes. Watch cornerback press alignment on the stack, tight press with no help over the top signals man coverage and the natural rub from the stacked release should spring someone open. Post-snap, key the flow of the linebackers, if they widen out to cover the flat and out route immediately the middle of the field opens up for the returning Y route. Identify any user controlled defender lurking underneath, since the comeback and returning out routes both work into the same intermediate area and a smart user defender can jump both if he reads the QB eyes. This concept struggles against disciplined zone drops with a deep half safety staying home, since the vertical shot gets taken away and the underneath defenders can sit on the shorter breaking routes.
Send the pre-snap motion and watch how the defense reacts, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you are almost certainly facing man coverage and can attack with confidence.
Take the deep shot on the backside early in a series to see how the safety rotates, then come back to this play later to hit the comeback or the returning Y route once the defense is playing to stop the vertical shot.
Use this on second and medium or third and short to medium distances since the stacked routes on the trips side create natural rubs against man coverage and the short out is an easy checkdown against zone.
Hot route the Y route into a quicker breaking option if you are facing heavy pressure looks, since the returning route takes extra time to develop and can get the QB hit against fast interior blitzes.
Pair this play with SFT Mtn Stack PoCo or SFT Mtn Stack Shake N Up from the same formation so the defense sees the same stack alignment but has to respect multiple route combinations.
