Breakdown

Spot Slot Out lines up out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk with a trips-style look to one side and a single receiver isolated on the backside. The backside X runs a straight vertical stem up the sideline, while the trio side features a spot concept: the outside receiver breaks into a corner route, the inside slot receiver runs a quick out to the flat, and the third receiver (the red route) works a shallow drag underneath into the void created by the corner and out routes. This is a classic Cover 3 beater built to attack the flat defender and the deep third with a high-low stretch, so the primary read progression starts with the quick out to the flat, moves to the drag sitting underneath the linebackers, and finishes with the corner route if the defense rotates hard to take away the underneath stuff.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender pre-snap, if he sits too deep or widens with the corner route, the out and drag combo will be wide open underneath. Key the middle linebacker depth, if he drops too far to cover the drag, the flat out becomes an easy pitch and catch. Against Cover 3, this play exploits the seam between the corner and flat defenders, so look for the user controlling the deep third to bite on the corner route first. Against man coverage or Cover 1 with a deep robber, the drag route becomes vulnerable to a lurking linebacker sitting underneath, so be ready to check it down to the flat out instead. Disguised blitzes with the slot corner crashing on a nano blitz can jump the out route immediately, so if pre-snap alignment shows the slot defender crowding the line, prioritize the backside vertical or drag as a hot read.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and short since the out route and drag give you quick, high-percentage completions against zone shells.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a single high safety, since that usually means Cover 3 or Cover 1 and this concept is built to punish the flat defender in that shell.

If you see man coverage with no help over the slot, hot route the drag into a quicker option route or speed it up to beat a linebacker in man.

Combine this with Slot Cross or Double Drags from the same set to keep the defense guessing between spot concepts and full field crossing routes, since both create similar initial reads but attack different levels.

Pair this play with HB Slip Screen or HB Base as a changeup to slow down aggressive linebackers who key on the quick out and drag combo.
