PA Y Wheel runs out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk with play-action fake to sell the run before the QB works through his progression. The TE runs a wheel route out of the backfield area, breaking outside and vertically up the sideline as the primary man beater, while the two outside receivers run a deep crossing combo and a corner/post breaking route to clear space and hold safeties. The backside receiver runs a deep in as a checkdown option against zone drops, and the play-action fake to the running back holds linebackers and gives the wheel route time to develop against man coverage.
Pre-snap, check for man coverage alignment such as corners playing tight technique on the outside receivers and a linebacker or slot defender aligned over the TE, since this indicates the wheel route has a favorable matchup. Watch safety depth before the snap, a single-high safety shell suggests the defense is vulnerable to the wheel beating underneath coverage over the top. Post-snap, key on the linebacker assigned to the TE out of the backfield, if he sits and reads run instead of carrying the wheel vertically the route will be wide open down the sideline. Look for zone drops from underneath defenders, if the defense is playing zone the deep in route becomes the better outlet since the wheel route can get squeezed by a flat defender sinking into coverage. Identify blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge, since a hard edge blitz can disrupt the play-action fake and force the QB into a quick decision before the wheel route fully develops.
Use this play on early downs or manageable third downs when the defense is likely to bite on the run fake, especially against aggressive run fits or linebackers who key the mesh point. Pre-snap, look for man coverage indicators like press corners or a single-high safety shell since the wheel route is designed to win one on one against linebackers and slower defenders in man. If you see a hard corner blitz or overload look, hot route the TE wheel to a quick out or use the deep in as your first read to avoid a sack. Pair this play with HB Base or Inside Zone from the same set earlier in a drive so the play-action fake carries more weight and linebackers start cheating up on run reads. Sequence PA Y Wheel with Double Drags or Saints Cross later in a series once you have shown the wheel concept, forcing the defense to respect both the wheel route and the crossing combos out of the same formation.
