Breakdown

Slot Cross out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk sends the inside slot receiver on a deep crossing route that stems from one side of the field all the way to the numbers on the opposite side, working underneath a corner route from the far outside receiver and above a shallow out from the trio side tight end or slot man. The near boundary receiver runs a vertical clear-out to occupy deep coverage, while the back releases into a flat/wheel route out of the backfield for a checkdown or man beater against overaggressive linebackers. This is a man beater concept built on the crosser creating natural rub traffic and separation against man coverage, with the primary read progression going crosser first, corner route second, and flat/wheel route as the outlet against blitz or if the crosser gets picked up.

Defensive Reads

Key the middle linebacker at the snap, if he opens his hips to run with the crosser you are likely facing man coverage and the wheel route out of the backfield becomes a strong outlet Watch the deep safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety shell tells you the crosser has one less defender to fight through on its path across the field Identify user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone since a jumped crosser route can be picked off if a linebacker sits and reads the quarterback's eyes Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined linebacker drops will squeeze the throwing window on the crosser, so be ready to check down to the flat route Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge put pressure on the timing of this play, so recognize overload blitzes pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out quickly on the crosser or dump it to the back

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the linebacker depth to confirm man coverage before committing to the crosser as your first read

If you see a single high safety shell, expect man underneath and let the crosser work across the field for a big gain against trailing defenders

Hot route the flat/wheel route to a corner route if you are facing zone heavy defenses since the crosser will sit in soft spots against zone but has less explosive potential

Pair this play with Double Drags or DBL Ins earlier in a series so linebackers start jumping shallow crossers, opening up the deeper cross for a bigger gap

Best called on second or third and medium since the crosser needs time to develop, so protect the quarterback with a check to a quick game play like Stick if you sense pressure
