Breakdown

Shock H Option is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Trio Wk that stresses the field with three verticals and a middle option route. The backside outside receiver runs a straight go route up the numbers, the backside slot works a vertical release into a corner breaking route, and the frontside outside receiver runs a skinny post up the seam. The inside slot receiver runs an option route off the H back alignment, sitting or breaking based on the leverage of the underneath defender, while the running back releases up the middle on a vertical stem as the primary read against man coverage. This is a man beater built to isolate the option route against linebackers or nickel defenders and to hit the skinny post if safeties bite on the option route.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high look, since single high alignments often mean man coverage underneath and open up the skinny post and option route. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink too deep into zone drops the option route sits down in the void for an easy completion. Key the slot cornerback or nickel defender's leverage against the option route runner, inside leverage means the route breaks outward, outside leverage means it breaks inward. User lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field can jump both the option route and the running back's vertical release, so check for a spy or rat in the hole before committing to the middle read. Cover 3 zone shells with a deep half safety rotating over the top can squeeze the backside corner route, making the option route or skinny post the smarter answer against that shell.

Usage Tips

Read the option route first since it is your built in answer against both zone and man, sitting down in the void versus zone and breaking away from leverage versus man coverage.

If the safety shell shows two high pre-snap, expect the corner route on the backside slot to have room to work behind the linebackers before the safety can rotate over.

Against man coverage look immediately to the option route or the skinny post, since both routes create natural separation using angle breaks that man defenders struggle to mirror.

Use this play on second or third and medium situations where the option route conversion is realistic and the verticals keep the safeties honest.

Pair this with HB Base or Inside Zone from the same formation to keep defenses honest on early downs, then dial up Shock H Option when you diagnose man coverage or a single high shell.
