PA Post Dig Shot is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk that hits the play fake before attacking the middle of the field with two crossing routes over the top. The diagram shows the inside slot receiver running a deep dig that cuts across the field underneath a post from the backside X, while the third receiver runs a shorter out and up the seam to occupy the flat defender. The blocking is set up for a play-action pass protection to sell the run fake, and the primary read progression starts with the post shot up top, then works down to the dig sitting underneath if the post is covered.
Identify single-high safety alignment pre-snap since that leaves the post route with a one-on-one shot over the top. Watch for user-controlled safeties sitting deep in the middle of the field, as they can undercut both the post and the dig if they read the quarterback's eyes. Key linebacker depth after the snap, shallow linebackers who bite on the play-action fake open a throwing lane for the dig route crossing behind them. Cover 3 with a hard-charging blitz can beat this play if the quarterback does not get the ball out before the fake extends the play clock. Look for cornerbacks pressing at the line, since aggressive man coverage on the post can be exploited if the receiver stacks the defender early in the route.
Use this play on early downs when defenses are keyed on the run to maximize the play-action freeze on linebackers.
Check pre-snap for two-high safety shells since single-high looks invite the post route to win over the top for a shot play touchdown.
Hot route the shorter route into a hook or drag if you see a heavy blitz look so you have an outlet against pressure.
Pair this play with HB Base or Inside Zone earlier in a drive to set up the play-action fake and get linebackers biting downhill.
Sequence this shot play after Slants or Quick Unders so the defense respects the quick game and opens up the deep post and dig combo.
