Read Option Bubble is a zone read run play out of Shotgun Trips TE with a bubble screen packaged to the trips side, giving the QB a true run-pass conflict read on the play side defender. The diagram shows the QB reading the mesh point with the HB on inside zone action while a slot receiver bends underneath for the bubble as the outside receivers stalk block. This is an RPO at heart, so the primary read progression starts with the mesh defender (DE or force player) for the give or keep, then the QB peeks to the bubble read defender to decide between handing off, keeping the zone read, or throwing the quick bubble screen.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side defensive end or OLB for the classic zone read key, if he crashes down on the mesh the QB should pull and either keep or throw bubble. Identify the slot corner or overhang defender on the trips side pre-snap, aggressive blitz alignment or press technique tips off the bubble screen tag. This concept beats light boxes, man coverage on the bubble receiver, and defenses that overload the box to stop inside zone. It struggles against disciplined scrape exchange linebackers and defenses that play a cloud corner sitting on the bubble route with underneath zone help. Post-snap, look for a user controlled defender flying downhill on the bubble read, since that usually means the mesh point run lane opens up behind him.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, count the box and identify if the defense is playing with a light box (5 or fewer) which signals you should keep the ball on the ground or take the bubble instantly.
Check the flat defender or slot corner alignment on the trips side before the snap, if he is sitting deep or blitzing off the edge that is your green light to fire the bubble immediately.
Use the hot route or user flick to speed up the bubble throw against aggressive edge pressure teams that crash the mesh point every play.
This play pairs well with RPO Alert Bubble and RPO Zone Alert Bubble in the same set since all three show identical run action and force the defense to respect both run fits and the bubble concept.
Best called on early downs or short yardage situations where defenses are more likely to sell out against the run, since the bubble punishes overcommitted linebackers and safeties.
