Pin Pull Sweep is a gap scheme run play out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk that pulls the backside guard and tackle to lead block around the edge while the playside line pins down on the defensive front. The RB takes a lateral handoff and presses the line before pressing outside off the pullers, reading the kickout and lead blocks in sequence. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read progression is playside edge first (pin block leverage), then the puller in space to decide cutback lane versus bounce outside.
Watch the playside edge defender at the snap, if he squeezes down hard to string out the pin block, the RB should look to cut back behind the pullers instead of bouncing. Key the flow of the linebackers, if they scrape hard to the play call side, a heavy box with fast flow linebackers can beat this play by chasing down the pullers before they seal anyone. Identify the force defender (usually a safety or slot corner) reading run fit, aggressive user blitzers off the edge can blow this play up before the pullers get set. Base 4-3 or 4-4 fronts with two-gapping defensive tackles tend to struggle against the down blocks, giving the sweep room to develop. Stacked fronts or run blitzes with extra defenders in the box can beat Pin Pull Sweep, so avoid calling it against clear run-blitz pre-snap alignments with safeties creeping down.
Run this out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk on early downs when the defense shows a light box, six or fewer defenders in the run fit.
Check the defensive ends and edge alignment pre-snap, if they are crashing hard down inside you have an easy bounce lane once the pullers get outside.
Pair Pin Pull Sweep with Inside Zone and Mtn Buck Sweep from the same set so defenders cannot key run direction off formation tendency alone.
Use manual control on your lead puller to seal the force defender or linebacker filling the alley, this is the single biggest factor in explosive gains.
Mix in RPO Zone Read Bubble and RPO Power Peek from this set on early downs so defenses respect the perimeter threat and slow down their run fits against Pin Pull Sweep.
