Breakdown
HB Base is a designed dive run out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk with 11 personnel, sending the running back straight through the interior gap as shown by the red arrow on the diagram. The offensive line down blocks to seal the middle while the four receivers (two split outside on each side) run off coverage vertically to hold defenders and clear the box of extra defenders. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO tag, designed to win with a downhill north-south blocking scheme rather than reads, and the primary progression is simply hitting the dive gap as it opens.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and identify if the defense is in a run-friendly light box or has rotated a safety down to add a run defender. Key the middle linebacker's depth and lean, if he is crashing downhill immediately at the snap this play can get blown up before the hole develops. Watch for defensive tackles getting a two-gap read, since a disciplined interior lineman can clog the dive lane the blocking scheme relies on. This play struggles against nano blitzes or interior stunts that shoot gaps quickly, since there is no RPO bailout built in. It beats light boxes and defenses playing off coverage on the outside receivers, since those defenders are occupied by the vertical releases instead of crashing down to help in the run fit.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains without tipping pass intent.
Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter run or checking to a quick pass instead.
Since all four receivers release vertically, this naturally occupies man corners and deep zone defenders, so it pairs well after calling RPO Zone Peek or RPO Read Bubble to condition the defense into expecting a pass read.
Mix HB Base in with HB Mid Draw and Inside Zone from this same set to keep linebackers guessing on run direction and gap fits.
Avoid calling this against heavy blitz looks with a stacked A gap since the play lacks an RPO or blocking adjustment to bail out against extra rushers.
