Breakdown

Boomerang 0 1 Trap is a gap scheme trap run out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk with motion sent across the formation before the snap to shift defensive alignment and confirm the box count. The diagram shows the frontside guard pulling to lead through the trap hole while the rest of the line down blocks, sealing the interior for the HB to press the mesh point and cut off the puller. This is a run play built to attack light boxes and gap exchange defenders, with the primary read being the trap defender: if he crashes down the HB presses outside the pulling guard's block, if he squeezes the puller kicks him out and the HB cuts up inside.

Defensive Reads

Key the frontside defensive tackle and edge defender immediately after the snap, if either crashes hard down the line the trap block is there to seal them and the HB should press outside. Watch for a scraping linebacker reading the pulling guard, an aggressive user linebacker who flows fast to the trap can blow this up before the puller reaches his landmark. Identify one-high versus two-high safety shells pre-snap, one-high shells with an extra man in the box are the toughest matchup for this trap concept since gap integrity is easier to maintain. Look for defensive fronts that slant or angle away from the trap side, slanting fronts naturally clear the gap and make this run hit even faster. Beware of a defense that stays disciplined with a stacked front and does not bite on the initial line movement, patient gap-sound defenses with a spy or extra run fitter can shut this play down.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the motion man is followed across the formation you are looking at man coverage and the trap should hit hard against a lighter box.

Check the defensive line alignment before the snap, this play is most effective against even fronts or shaded fronts where the trap defender is not already sitting in the intended gap.

Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) to keep the defense honest and set up play action shots later in the drive.

Pair this with RPO Power Peek and RPO Zone Peek from the same set since they share blocking landmarks, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run fits and opening up the trap lane.

Mix in Boomerang Y Delay and HB Mid Draw as complementary calls from this formation to keep defenders guessing between gap schemes and delayed hits, preventing linebackers from sitting on the trap key.
