Breakdown

PA Read is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk that fakes the outside zone run to hold the linebackers before attacking downfield. The backside X receiver runs a deep comeback while the flanker to that side clears out on an out route underneath, and the play side TE releases on a corner route to the sideline as the slot runs a deep dig crossing the middle of the field. The HB fakes a jet motion into the backfield fake before releasing on a shallow flat route, giving you a built in checkdown if the deep shots are covered. The primary read starts with the TE corner route attacking the flat to seam area, works to the dig from the slot sitting behind linebackers, and checks down to the HB in the flat if the coverage rolls over the top.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two high safeties rotating down late, this signals zone coverage and tells you to work the dig route on time. Single high safety alignment pre snap means the corner route and comeback have more room to work against man or cover 3. If linebackers stay flat footed at the snap instead of stepping up on run action, the defense is likely playing pass first and the underneath routes will be tighter. Watch the flat defender or nickel to the play side TE corner, a hard jump on that route opens up the seam behind him. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them get exposed by the HB flat release, since the back sneaks out late after selling the fake.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second and medium when defenses are still respecting the run fake from Doubles HB Wk personnel.

Check the safety alignment pre snap, single high shells invite the deep comeback and dig since defenders are outnumbered up top.

If you see two deep safeties sitting on the corner and comeback, work the dig on rhythm since it settles behind the linebacker level.
