Breakdown

PA Read is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk that sells the outside zone fake to the HB before the QB works a deep progression. The backside X runs a deep comeback while the flanker on that side runs a flat route underneath, giving the offense a natural high-low read on the boundary corner. On the play side, the TE runs a deep out that breaks toward the sideline while the outside receiver stems vertically up the seam and bends across the field on a deep crosser, stretching the defense from the numbers to the opposite hash. This is a man beater and zone beater in one package: the crosser attacks man coverage by working across zones and picking off trailing defenders, while the comeback and flat combo punishes zone defenders who sink too deep. The primary read starts with the deep crosser working across the field, then works down to the comeback route if the safety over the top squeezes the crosser.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties versus one deep safety. Two high shells are more vulnerable to the deep crosser since there is more grass to work with underneath the safeties. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If they bite hard on the run fake and flow toward the line, the deep crosser and comeback routes will have soft coverage behind them. Post-snap, key any user controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field or lurking near the crosser's path, since that is the primary window the offense wants to exploit. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness for this concept, since the crosser can create instant separation against trailing defenders. Zone defenses that spot drop with a deep half safety who reads the QB's eyes and jumps the crosser will shut this play down, so if you see that shell recognition, be ready to check down to the flat route instead.

Usage Tips

Use PA Read on early downs, especially first or second and short to medium, so the run fake actually holds linebackers and safeties for a beat.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. Two deep safeties who stay wide open up the deep crosser working through the middle void.

If you see man coverage, key the crosser as your first look since it naturally rubs off underneath defenders and creates separation over the middle.

Against single high looks, work the comeback route on the backside since the corner is often playing with outside leverage and will bite on the flat route below it.

Pair this play with RPO Zone Read Bubble or Read Option from the same set to keep linebackers honest on run fits, then hit them with PA Read once they start creeping up on early downs.
