Four Verticals out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk sends all four eligible receivers vertical, with both outside receivers releasing straight up the numbers, the slot receiver climbing a seam route, and the HB running a delayed inside vertical release from the backfield after checking the box for blitz. The offensive line stays in to protect in a five man pass pro look, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to read the field. This is a pure zone beater designed to stress Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by overloading the deep middle and forcing the safeties to pick a side, though it also works as a man beater against single high looks if your receivers win vertical leverage. The primary read progression starts with the seam route from the slot, works to the boundary vertical if the safety cheats inside, and comes back to the HB delay route as a check down against heavy pressure or a jumped underneath zone.
Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties as a strong indicator of Cover 2 or Cover 4, both of which this play is designed to stress by flooding the seams. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into the seams instead of respecting the HB delay, that check down route will be wide open underneath. Post-snap, key the safeties, if they bail deep and split evenly, throw the seam route on the side where the corner has to defend the vertical alone. This play struggles against Cover 3 with a rangy single high safety who can play the deep middle third and take away the inside seam reads. Beware disguised blitz packages that show two deep pre-snap then rotate one safety down, since the extra rusher can collapse the pocket before the verticals fully develop.
Use this play on second or third and long when the defense is more likely to sit in a two deep or three deep zone shell rather than crowd the box.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if both safeties are shaded to one side, throw opposite to the vacated seam for an easy explosive play.
Hot route the HB delay into a flat route if you see man coverage with no underneath help, since the natural rub from the formation can spring him wide open.
Pair this play with Slants or Portland Mesh in the same set to keep the defense honest, since both punish teams that sit on the vertical shell after seeing Four Verticals once.
Against Cover 2, target the seam between the corner and safety before the safety can rotate over, this window closes fast so get the ball out on time.
