Breakdown

Inside Zone out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk is a pure zone run play with the HB aligned offset in the backfield and the offensive line stepping in unison toward the play side to create combo blocks and displace the front. The diagram shows a standard 11 personnel look with two outside receivers stacked wide on each side, a TE tight to the formation, and the HB taking a lateral path off the QB before pressing the line of scrimmage on a zone track. This is a zone beater designed to attack bubbles in the defensive front rather than a specific man or zone coverage, and the primary read progression is the HB reading the play side double team first, then bending backside if the front flows too hard toward the play call.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, if the middle linebacker is sitting shallow (5 yards or closer) he is likely keying run and will fill the A or B gap quickly. This play struggles against interior nano blitzes and A gap stunts since the zone blocking scheme needs a half second to climb to the second level, so if you see a delayed A gap blitz package be ready to check the play. Identify safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety shell (Cover 3 or Cover 1) leaves fewer defenders in the box on standard fronts and is more favorable for the zone run. Look for defensive tackles shading to a one gap technique, this signals the defense is trying to stack a gap and can be exploited by running away from the shade or using the RPO tags built into this set. If the user controls a linebacker and immediately crashes downhill at the snap without respecting run fake pump action, that is a sign the defense is sitting on inside zone tendencies and you should mix in a play-action counter from this same personnel grouping.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive front pre-snap for gap alignment, if you see a bunched interior with both defensive tackles shaded to one gap, run the ball away from that shade for a cleaner lane.

Use this play on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your RPO package in this same set.

Pair Inside Zone with RPO Zone Read Bubble and RPO Zone Peek from this set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the perimeter bubble threat off identical zone blocking.

If the defense shows a heavy box with eight or more defenders, consider hot routing the TE to a quick out or checking to a play-action shot instead of forcing the run.

Trust the zone blocking scheme and do not bail on the play immediately, let the HB press the hole and use manual vision control (left stick) to find the crease as the line works its combo blocks.
