Breakdown

Corner Strike is a Shotgun Doubles HB Wk play-action-free dropback pass built around a corner route from the boundary receiver as the deep shot. The outside receiver to the strong side runs a corner route breaking off the top of the numbers, while the slot receiver on that side runs an out breaking underneath it, creating a natural high-low corner combo on that side of the field. On the backside, the two receivers stack a deep out and a wheel/comeback combo, giving you a full field flood concept with the HB releasing into a check release or flat route. The primary read starts with the corner route against man or off zone, then works down to the underneath out route, and finally over to the backside flood if the strong side is capped.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, identify single high safety alignment and outside corner leverage, if the corner is playing inside shade the corner route is wide open on the sideline. Post snap, key the flat defender or curl to flat player, if he sinks with the out route the corner throw is live behind him. Watch for Cover 3 cloud or Cover 4 quarters shells, both can squeeze the corner route with a deep half or deep third defender sinking outside. If the defense shows two high safeties presnap and rotates down into man after the snap, expect a lurk defender to jump the underneath out route so progress quickly to the backside flood. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers leave the flood concept on an island against man coverage, so identify if the blitz is coming from the strong or weak side to know which combo to prioritize.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells presnap since the corner route wins big against Cover 1 and Cover 3 when the corner is playing outside leverage.

Motion the HB or slot receiver before the snap to identify if the defense is in man coverage, if a defender follows the motion you know to lean on the corner and out combo immediately.

Use hot routes to convert the underneath out into a quick hitch or spot route against teams that squat their corners in zone to bait the corner throw.

This play pairs well with RPO Peek Slant and RPO Zone Alert Bubble out of the same formation, since defenses that sit on the quick game will get gashed by the corner shot.

Best called on second and long or first down shot plays when you have play clock to let the corner route develop, avoid using it in obvious short yardage since the deep route takes time.
