PA Seams is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk that attacks the middle of the field with vertical seam routes. Off the play fake, both inside receivers (the slot from the trips side and the TE or slot from the two-receiver side) release up the seams, while the two outside receivers run off the corners on go routes to clear space and hold the safeties. This is a man beater designed to exploit linebackers who bite on the run fake and safeties who get too aggressive against the play action, with the primary read progression working from the red seam route (the deeper, more inside breaking seam) to the closer yellow seam based on which linebacker or safety vacates first.

Defensive Reads

Look for linebackers cheating up into run fits pre-snap, since PA Seams is built to exploit exactly that aggressive downhill trigger once the seams open behind them. Identify single high safety shells (Cover 1 or Cover 3) as the ideal defense to attack, because the seam routes split the difference between the hook zones and the deep safety. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field in Cover 3 or Cover 4, since a disciplined defender sitting on the seam read can undercut the throw if the quarterback does not manipulate him with eyes. Beware two deep safety shells with disciplined linebackers who stay in their zone drops, as this coverage compresses the seam windows and forces a checkdown or throwaway. Key on corner blitz or overload pressure looks, since PA Seams relies on the offensive line holding up long enough for the seams to clear, and an unblocked edge rusher can force a premature or errant throw.

Usage Tips

Sell the play fake by holding the snap animation and letting the run action develop before looking downfield, since linebackers who do not respect the fake will sit in the seams and jump the throw.

Use this on early downs or in run-heavy personnel situations where defenses are anticipating Inside Zone or Mtn Buck Sweep, since the play fake mirrors those run concepts from the same formation.

Check safety depth before the snap. Two high safeties with soft corners signal a good seam window, while a single high safety in the middle of the field means you should be ready to move to the backside seam away from that defender.

Hot route the outside go routes into quick hitches or comebacks against aggressive man corners if you need a faster, safer completion instead of pushing the deep seams.

Pair this play with RPO Zone Alert Bubble or RPO Read Bubble earlier in a series to condition the defense to respect the run and bubble screen, then punish overaggressive linebacker flow with PA Seams later in the same drive.
