Breakdown

PA Seams runs a play-action fake out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk, freezing the linebackers before sending both inside receivers up the seams while the outside receivers run vertical routes to occupy the corners and safeties. The two seam runners create a natural high-low stretch on any Mike or Sam linebacker who has to respect the run fake, making this a strong zone beater against single-high shells and split safety looks that leave the middle of the field thin. Primary read progression starts with the seam route to the play side (the red route breaking toward the numbers) as your first look, then works to the backside seam if the safety rotates over, with the outside verticals serving as the alert if the defense shows man coverage and bites on the play fake.

Defensive Reads

Identify two-high shells pre-snap since Cover 2 and Cover 4 leave natural seam windows that this concept is designed to exploit before the safeties can rotate down. Watch the Mike linebacker at the snap, if he steps up hard on the run fake and turns his shoulders, the seam route behind him is open immediately for a chunk gain. Man coverage with press corners on the outside verticals is a green light to trust your seam runners working vertically against any linebacker in man, since athletic mismatches favor the offense. Beware disguised Cover 1 or Cover 3 with a deep middle robber, a user-controlled safety sitting in the seam-hole can jump the throw if you stare down the primary read too long. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge or through the A-gap force a quick decision, so key the protection pickup post-snap and be ready to check down or throw the seam early if the pocket collapses before the route develops.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) when you have established the run game with HB Base or Inside Zone from this same set, since the play fake sells harder once the defense respects the ground attack.

Check the safety depth pre-snap, if you see two deep safeties sitting at 10 plus yards, target the seam that attacks the seam-flat void between the corner and the rotating safety.

Against Cover 3 or single-high shells, hot route the backside outside vertical into a comeback or dig if you feel a user lurk sitting in the deep middle, this keeps the concept alive without forcing a throw into a deep third defender.

Pair this play with RPO Zone Read Bubble or RPO Power Peek earlier in a series to condition the defense to crash down on run fakes, then hit them with PA Seams once linebackers start biting hard on your play action stems.

Use max protect or a quick hitch on the flat route if the offensive line count favors the defense, since the play design leaves the seam routes exposed if pressure gets home before the seams clear the linebacker level.
