The diagram shows the outside receiver running a deep clear out corner route, the slot receiver running the dagger seam straight up the middle, and the inner slot breaking outside on a deep dig, while the running back releases into a flat route as a checkdown. This is a classic dagger concept designed to attack both Cover 2 and Cover 3 by stacking a vertical seam read underneath the deep clear out, creating a natural high low on the middle linebacker or deep half safety. Primary read progression starts with the seam route working the hole in the coverage, moves to the deep dig if the safety jumps the seam, and checks down to the running back in the flat if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap check safety alignment, two deep safeties usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4 so expect the seam to be your bread and butter read. Watch the slot cornerback leverage, if he is aligned inside expect him to jump the seam which opens the dig behind him. Post snap track the deep half safety, if he stays flat footed on the corner route the seam will split him and the other safety for a big gain. Key the flat defender against Cover 3 looks, if he widens with the running back the underneath dig sits in a void that the flat defender vacated. This play struggles against a hard double team on the seam from a robber linebacker and a jumping safety, so recognize a two high shell rotating late into a single high disguise and be ready to check down to the flat.

Usage Tips

Look at safety depth pre snap to confirm two high or single high shell before the snap so you know whether the seam or the dig will be open post snap.

Use the seam route as your first read against Cover 2 since it splits the safeties in the honey hole before the corner clears out the deep boundary defender.

Against Cover 3 shift your eyes to the dig route since the flat defender and deep third corner cannot cover both the corner route and the underneath break at the same time.

Hot route the running back to a wide flat release if you expect a blitz so you have an immediate answer against pressure and man coverage from a linebacker.

Pair this play with Y Cross or Slants from the same set to keep the defense honest on shorter routes before hitting them with the dagger shot on third and medium or third and long.
