Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify two high safeties, this signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells where the dig sits in the soft spot between the flat defender and the deep safety. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard with the seam route the window for the dig closes and you should progress to the corner and comeback combo on the far side. Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment before the snap, two high shells with soft corners are where the dig route sits down in the window behind linebackers and in front of the safety for an easy completion. Against man coverage, trust the seam route to clear out the underneath defender and hit the dig on rhythm since the clear-out action creates natural separation. Use the HB flat release as your answer versus underneath zone drops or when the pass rush forces an early throw, it is a low risk checkdown that keeps the offense on schedule. This play works best on second and medium to third and long since it needs time to develop the vertical and dig combo, so protect it with quicker game plays like Slants or Double Slants on earlier downs to set up the defense. Pair this call with Four Verticals or PA Posts in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot sit on the intermediate dig read once they start jumping the route in film study.
