Breakdown

Y Cross out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk is a classic man beater built around the tight end running a deep crossing route from one side of the formation all the way across the field. The outside receivers occupy the corners and safeties with vertical or comeback routes while the Y Cross clears underneath zones and creates natural rub traffic against man coverage. Primary progression starts with the crosser working from the numbers to the opposite hash, then works to any checkdown or curl route settling in the void if the crosser is taken away by a robber safety or trailing linebacker.

Defensive Reads

Check safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety indicates man coverage underneath which is exactly what the crosser is designed to exploit. Watch for linebackers sitting at intermediate depth, this signals zone coverage or a lurking defender ready to jump the crossing route. If the defense shows two deep safeties with corners playing tight press, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 which can clog the crosser's path with underneath zone defenders. Post snap, track any user controlled linebacker or safety flowing toward the crosser's route, that is the biggest threat to blow this play up. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them can be beaten quickly since the crosser and checkdown option give a fast release against pressure, but disguised zone blitzes with a spy can bait you into a bad read.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since the crosser has room to work underneath the deep half against Cover 1 or Cover 3.

Motion the HB or use a hot route to convert the checkdown into a flat route if the defense shows blitz, giving you a quick outlet against pressure.

Pair this with PA Cross or Portland Mesh on early downs so the defense has to respect both a straight drop back crosser and a play-action crosser off similar formation and personnel.

Best called on second and medium to second and long when you have time to let the crosser develop across the field.

Against aggressive user linebackers who like to sit and jump crossing routes, alternate with Slot Post or Double Post to keep the defense honest on deeper shots.
