Breakdown

Double Post is a five man protection concept out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk that isolates both outside receivers on post routes to attack the middle of the field. The two outside receivers break in on post routes that stack the safeties, the slot receiver runs a corner route to hold the flat defender and safety over the top, and the inside receiver runs a deep dig that sits behind the linebackers while the HB releases on a shallow out to the boundary as a checkdown. This is a Cover 2 and Cover 4 beater designed to split the safeties with the dual posts while the dig and out give the quarterback underneath answers if the safeties stay deep, and the primary read starts with the two posts before working down to the dig and out.

Defensive Reads

Look at safety depth and width before the snap, if both safeties are deep and outside the numbers the post routes have a clear driving lane between them Watch the middle linebacker's initial drop, if he sinks deep to help on the dig route that opens a throwing window for the near post Cover 2 shells are vulnerable here because the corners jump the flat or corner route and leave the post route uncovered behind them Cover 4 with soft safeties can be shut down if the safeties sit on the posts, so look for the underneath dig and HB out as answers when the safeties do not bite Man coverage with no help over the top gets beaten easily by both posts, but watch for a user controlled safety sitting in the middle of the field to jump the post routes late

Usage Tips

Pre snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating down, because this play is built to punish two high shells like Cover 2 and Cover 4

If the safeties bail deep at the snap, throw the post to the side where the corner is playing outside leverage since that post will sit in the void between the safety and corner

Use the HB out route as a built in checkdown against pressure or when both posts are covered, especially on third and short to medium distance

Hot route the slot corner route into a deeper corner or a flat route if you see Cover 3 or Cover 1 to prevent an extra defender from robbing the middle posts

Pair this play with Double Cross or PA Posts in the same set so the defense has to respect crossing patterns and post routes equally, which slows down safety rotation on later downs
