Sail Dig aligns out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk with 11 personnel and gives you a true sail concept combined with a deep dig from the backside. To the closed side, the TE runs a corner route stretching the flat to deep third defender while the slot receiver runs an out underneath, creating a classic high low sail read against Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells. The backside receiver runs a deep dig across the middle of the field, and the HB releases into a checkdown swing route out of the backfield, giving you a built in outlet against man coverage or a blitz. The primary progression starts with the sail combo (corner then out) to the play call side, then works back to the dig if the safety jumps the corner, with the HB swing as your last resort answer versus pressure.

Watch the flat defender to the sail side, since Sail Dig is designed to put him in conflict between the underneath out route and the deep corner route Key the deep safety over the sail concept, if he jumps the corner route hard, come off it and work the dig running underneath him Against Cover 3, identify whether the middle linebacker or hook defender drops deep enough to wall off the dig route, since a shallow drop leaves a throwing window over the middle Look for user controlled defenders sitting in the shallow crossing lanes or lurking near the dig, this is the most common way defenses take away the deep in-route Check linebacker depth and blitz indicators pre-snap, since if the defense brings extra rushers off the edge the HB swing route becomes your fastest answer before the sail and dig routes fully develop

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since Sail Dig is built to punish both Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with different reads

If you see two high safeties, key the corner route first, since the sail concept is designed to put the flat defender in a bind between the out and the corner

If the defense rotates to single high or shows Cover 3, work the deep dig over the middle as your primary answer since it sits in the void behind underneath zone defenders

Use this play on second and medium to second and long situations where you have room to work through your full progression without needing an immediate checkdown

Pair this call with Y Cross or Double Cross earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on shallow crossers, then hit them with the deeper sail and dig combo when they jump the underneath routes

Against aggressive man coverage or blitz-heavy defenses, be ready to check the ball down early to the HB swing route since it releases quickly and beats blitzes off the edge
