Boomerang Slot Swing lines up in Shotgun Doubles HB Wk with 11 personnel and shows a five man route concept designed to attack space underneath and vertically down the field. The backside X runs a deep boomerang route that stems outside then curls back to the sideline as a late outlet, while the slot receiver runs a quick out and up into the flag area against man leverage. On the strongside, the outside receiver pushes a deep dig back across the middle, the TE runs a hook and turn out toward the sideline, and the HB releases on a swing route out of the backfield underneath the flat blocker. The primary read starts with the HB swing as the checkdown against pressure, then progresses to the slot flag route and the deep dig if the linebackers and safeties bite on the underneath routes, making this a versatile man and zone beater depending on how the defense declares its coverage shell.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties, since that alignment forces the deep dig into tighter coverage and shifts your read to the flag and swing. Watch the flat defender and any linebacker spying the backfield, because if they widen too fast to take away the HB swing, the boomerang route on the backside becomes the late developing answer. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, since a slow or shallow drop opens the window for the deep dig to sit down behind him in zone coverage. User controlled defenders sitting in the shallow flat or lurking underneath the slot flag route can bait a quick throw, so look off the slot route before committing if you see a defender sinking to that landmark. This play struggles against aggressive Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 match zones that get quick outside width on the flag route, so be ready to check down to the swing or boomerang if the corners jump the underneath breaks immediately.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment pre-snap to determine if you are facing single high or two high, since the deep dig route works best against single high looks where the safety has to cover the middle third alone.
Use the HB swing as your immediate answer versus any blitz look, especially nano blitzes that bring extra rushers off the edge, because the flat blocker gives the swing route time to develop.
If you see man coverage on the slot receiver, trust the flag route breaking to the corner since it creates natural separation against inside leverage defenders.
This play works well on second and medium or third and short to medium because the swing route and boomerang give you built in checkdown options if the deeper routes are covered.
Pair this play with RPO Read Bubble or RPO Zone Alert Bubble earlier in a series to get defenders keying underneath, then hit this play to attack the same underneath areas but with more explosive route depth off the dig and flag.
