Double Slants is a quick-hitting man beater out of Shotgun Doubles HB Wk that attacks the underneath middle of the field with two slants breaking inside from both the boundary and slot receivers. The backside outside receiver runs a deep dig that clears out over the top while the far outside receiver runs a go route to occupy the deep defender, and the HB releases into a flat route out of the backfield as a checkdown. The primary read progression starts with the frontside slant, works to the backside slant, and checks down to the HB in the flat if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Read the slot corners pre-snap, if they are playing tight man coverage the slants will win quickly since the receivers break inside away from their leverage. Watch for zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, since the underneath linebackers can sit in the passing lanes and jump the slant routes if they read the quarterback's eyes. Key the middle linebacker's depth at the snap, a shallow drop suggests he is spying the slants and will undercut the throw. Look for user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow middle zone, since Double Slants relies on beating that exact window and a smart user lurk can bait an interception. If the defense brings a blitz off the edge, check the HB flat route immediately since the slants take too long to develop against pressure without a quick throw.

Use it on 3rd and short to medium since the slants develop fast and give the quarterback a high percentage completion against man coverage.

If you see press man or off man pre-snap on both slot corners, trust the frontside slant first since it wins quickest against man leverage.

Combine this play with Slants or RPO Peek Slant from the same set to keep defenses guessing between the double slant look and single slant variations.

Hot route the HB out of the flat into a quick screen or check him down immediately if the defense shows a blitz look, since he is your outlet against pressure.
