Check for man coverage indicators pre-snap like cornerbacks pressed on your outside receivers or a single high safety with linebackers showing man match leverage
If you see two safeties deep and soft zone drops underneath, consider hot routing one crosser into a sit route to settle in the void between zone defenders
Use motion on the slot receiver before the snap to force the defense to declare man or zone, this is critical against disguised coverages
This play shines on third and medium to third and long when defenders are more likely to sit in man coverage to protect against the sticks
Pair Portland Mesh with Y Cross or Double Cross earlier in a drive so the defense starts keying on crossing traffic, then punish overaggressive linebacker jumps with PA Posts or Four Verticals off the same formation look
Against nano blitz packages, get the ball out on the first crosser quickly since the shallow route is designed to beat pressure before it arrives
