Broncos China KO is a vertical shot play out of Shotgun 11 personnel designed to attack single high safety looks with a deep China route combo to the boundary while a flat or drag route underneath occupies the linebackers. This is primarily a man beater, using the China concept (out and up combo) to stack cornerbacks on double moves, though it also stresses a single high safety in zone if he bites on the underneath crosser. The primary read progression starts with the deep China route to see if the corner opens his hips on the out, then works down to the intermediate crosser, and finally checks down to the running back releasing out of the backfield.

Check the free safety pre-snap, if he is shaded toward the China route side in a two high shell, the deep double move is likely covered and you should progress to the underdneath crosser immediately Watch the flat defender or nickel corner at the snap, a hard jump on the short route signals man coverage and tells you the deep out and up will have room to work Identify blitz packages by counting the box defenders, a six man box with the slot corner blitzing off the edge means you need to get the ball out on the checkdown before the protection collapses User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate zone can undercut the crosser, so if you see a defender sink into that throwing lane, hold the ball and let the China route finish its break upfield Cover 3 shells with a deep third defender playing outside leverage will squeeze the vertical stem, forcing you to trust the underneath option route or dump it to the running back rather than force the deep shot

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety rotated to the boundary side, expect man coverage underneath and favor the China double move to the outside

Motion your slot receiver or use a hot route to check the flat defender if the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4, this removes the shortest zone drop and opens the crosser

Use this play on second and long or third and medium situations where defenses are more likely to play zone shells, since the deep out and up combo punishes cornerbacks sitting on the initial break

Pair this call with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek earlier in a series to get the defense biting on quick game reads, then hit them with China KO for a big shot when they start jumping short routes
