RPO Zone Peek pairs an inside zone run with a peek route concept, giving the quarterback a true run-pass conflict read at the snap. The offensive line executes zone blocking to the play side while a receiver runs a quick peek or slant into the vacated zone window, forcing the read defender to choose between crashing the run or sitting on the pass. This is a true RPO built to attack light boxes, with the primary read being the alley or force defender: give the ball on inside zone if he stays wide, pull and throw the peek if he steps up to fill.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the box count and whether the linebacker responsible for the peek window is stacked over the run gap or shaded toward the slot. Watch the force defender or overhang player at the snap since his first step tells you whether to hand off or pull and throw. Man coverage on the peek receiver with no underneath help is a green light to throw immediately, since the route is designed to win before the defender can flip and run. Zone shells with a linebacker sinking hard into the peek window can shut this down, so be ready to trust the run fit and hand it off into space. User controlled defenders sitting the peek route or blitzing off the edge are the biggest threat, so scan for a spy or a fast diagnosing linebacker before committing to the pass side.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only key the run side defender you plan to read, not the entire front seven.

Against a stacked box with the linebacker cheating downhill, pull and throw the peek immediately instead of waiting on the run fake.

Use this play on early downs (first and ten or second and short) since the run threat keeps linebackers honest and sets up explosive peek throws.

Sequence this with RPO Zone Alert Bubble and RPO Zone Read Bubble so the defense cannot key run fits based on route tags, forcing them to respect both the bubble flare and the peek window.

If the defense starts sitting on the peek route after a few reps, hand the ball off decisively into the run fit to punish over aggressive linebackers.
