Z Spot N Go is run from a Bunch alignment in Shotgun with the tight end wheeling vertically off the middle of the formation while the bunch releases into a spot combo, one receiver settling short at the sticks and two others clearing out on go routes up both sidelines. The lone backfield receiver runs a shallow drag underneath as an outlet against pressure. This is a Cover 3 beater by design, using the vertical stretch on both edges to hold the deep third defenders while the spot route settles into the hole vacated underneath, and the primary read progression starts with the spot route in the flat or hook zone before working outside to the go routes on the boundary if the corner bites.
Check the safety depth pre-snap, a single high safety signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 which this concept is designed to exploit with the vertical stretch on both sidelines. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he widens to take away the spot route the underneath window closes and the offense should already be progressing to the go route. User controlled defenders sitting in the hook or curl zone can jump the spot route late, so timing the throw before the linebacker gets depth is critical. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can shut this down since both go routes run into the deep half defenders, making the spot route the only real answer versus that shell. Man coverage with an underneath robber or lurking linebacker can undercut the spot route, so identify man alignment pre-snap and consider hot routing the spot into a quick out or option route instead.
Look for single high safety alignment pre-snap since this play is built to punish Cover 3 and Cover 1 zone drops rather than tight man coverage.
If the corner sits over the bunch at snap and jumps the spot route, hot route the outside go into a quicker comeback or hitch to beat the sink.
Use this on second and medium to second and long where the defense expects a shorter zone drop concept and gets caught peeking at the underneath spot.
Pair this with Bunch Verts or Bunch Sail earlier in a series so the defense respects the vertical stems, then come back to Z Spot N Go to hold linebackers and safeties on the play fake to the spot before the go route wins over the top.
Against zone shells, key the flat defender first, if he sinks with the spot route the outside go against a rolled up corner becomes the shot play.
