Smash Return is a classic Smash concept run out of a bunch alignment, built to attack Cover 2 shells with a high low read on the boundary side. The bunch receivers release into a corner route from the outside vertical stem and a quick hitch underneath from the inside receiver, while the backside runs a deep post from the top of the formation. The RB releases out of the backfield on a wheel route to the flat, giving the quarterback a swing valve if the underneath windows are clogged. This is a pass play designed as a Cover 2 beater, with the primary read starting on the corner over hitch smash combo before working to the backside post and finally the RB wheel as the checkdown.
Defensive Reads
Cover 2 shells with corners sitting on the flat are the primary target for this concept, since the corner route will climb over the top of the flat defender. Watch for a user controlled safety cheating toward the bunch side pre-snap, which signals a possible lurk or robber technique designed to jump the corner or post route. If the defense shows Cover 3 with three deep defenders, expect the post from the backside receiver to be your best matchup against a single high safety. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the RB out of the backfield is a green light to target the wheel route, since most backers cannot recover once the RB turns upfield. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge will speed up your progression, so be ready to get to the hitch route quickly as a built in answer against pressure.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the corner to the bunch side is playing off or bailing into a deep half, since that tells you whether the corner route or the hitch will be open first.
If you see two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, trust the smash concept and read corner to flat immediately without hesitation.
Use motion out of the bunch to force the defense to declare man or zone before the snap, which clarifies your first read against man beater versus zone beater situations.
This play works best on second and medium or third and short to intermediate distances where the hitch route has a built in completion versus soft zone drops.
Pair this call with Bunch Verts or Curls Attack in the same set to keep defenses honest, since both plays start with similar bunch releases but attack different levels of the field.
