Jets Dig is a man beater route concept out of the Shotgun Bunch formation, using the tight bunch alignment to create natural rub traffic against man coverage defenders. The concept features a dig route crossing the middle of the field from the bunch side, paired with an underneath crosser and a vertical or corner route from the backside receiver to hold the safety. The primary read progression starts with the dig sitting in the intermediate middle zone, then works to the underneath crosser if a linebacker or nickel corner jumps the dig, and finally to the backside vertical or corner if the defense rotates into a two high shell.

Defensive Reads

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners lined up tight on the bunch or a single high safety rotating late, since this play thrives against man to man and Cover 1. Identify Cover 3 zone drops post-snap: if the flat defender sinks and the middle linebacker widens to the dig lane, expect the window to close quickly and check down to the underneath crosser. Watch for a user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, since a smart user will bait the dig throw and jump the route for a pick six opportunity. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge or through a nano blitz up the middle can disrupt the timing needed for the dig to fully develop, so account for a quick throwing lane or check to a hot route. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties tend to have a natural soft spot in the intermediate middle, making the dig route a reliable answer if the underneath linebackers bite on shorter routes.
