Corner Strike is a Shotgun Bunch 11 personnel pass play built around a corner route from the outside bunch receiver that stems vertically then breaks hard toward the sideline. The two remaining bunch receivers work opposite the corner with a deep crossing route to the far sideline and an underneath out breaking away from the formation, creating a natural high low stretch on that side of the field. The fifth eligible receiver runs a short pivot or shake route near the line to give the quarterback a quick outlet if the corner and crosser are covered. This is a man beater first, since the corner route stacks and separates against man coverage while the crosser clears out underneath defenders, though the layered depth also gives it zone beater qualities against single high shells. Primary read progression starts with the corner route, works to the deep crossing route on the opposite side if the corner is capped, and checks down to the underneath pivot as the last resort.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify if the cornerback aligned over the bunch is playing outside leverage or inside shade, since outside leverage invites the corner route window immediately. Check safety depth and rotation, because a single high safety who bites on the underneath pivot route leaves the corner route wide open down the sideline. Post snap, watch for a user controlled defender sitting in a deep third or deep half, since a disciplined zone defender who reads the quarterback's eyes can undercut the corner route break. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can bracket the corner route from underneath, so if you see the flat defender sink into the breakout window, redirect to the deep crossing route instead. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest green light here, but beware of nano blitzes off the edge that can collapse the pocket before the corner route fully develops.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells before the snap since Corner Strike thrives when the corner route only has to beat one deep defender instead of two.

Use the corner route as your primary hot route target versus press man or trail technique, since the vertical stem into the breakout creates natural separation against tight coverage.

If you see two high safeties rotate down to the corner side, work the deep crossing route immediately since the far safety has to travel and often arrives late.

Pair this play with Bunch Sail or Bunch Verts in your call sheet so the defense cannot sit on the corner breakout tendency, forcing them to respect verticals from bunch every snap.

Run this on second and medium to second and long situations where a corner route completion moves the chains, and save it as a chunk play call off third down passing looks since defenders often sell out on shorter zone drops.
