Breakdown

Counter Y out of Shotgun Bunch is a power run design that pulls the backside guard and tackle around the point of attack to lead the HB through the hole. The bunch alignment to the play side lets the tight end and receivers combine on down blocks and kickout blocks while the HB takes a counter step away from the flow before cutting back downhill. This is a run play, not a pass concept, and the primary read progression starts with the pulling lineman's kickout block on the edge defender, then moves to the lead blocker turning up into the second level for the linebacker fit.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and gap alignment since Counter Y attacks light boxes with only six or seven defenders in the run fit. Watch for a Mike linebacker who reads pulling linemen quickly and flows hard to the play side, which can blow up the counter before the kickout block is set. Look for user-controlled defensive ends or edge players crashing down inside, since a disciplined edge that stays home can string the play out and force a negative gap read. Post-snap, track how fast the backside linebacker diagnoses the pull and chases, because a slow-flowing linebacker corps is exactly what this play is designed to exploit. Stacked fronts or heavy blitz packages that bring extra defenders into the box on early downs are the biggest threat since they outnumber the blockers before the puller can get to his target.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses are still base personnel and have not started stacking the box for obvious run situations. Check the defensive front pre-snap and if you see the linebackers cheating hard to the play side flow, be ready to bail into a different call since counter needs the misdirection to hold the backside pursuit. Once the ball is snapped, key the pulling guard and tackle and let them lead you through the designed hole rather than trying to bounce it outside prematurely. Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Sweep from the same Bunch set so the defense has to respect multiple gap schemes off identical personnel and alignment. Mix in Read Option or a play-action shot like PA Post afterward to punish linebackers who start flying downhill on the counter action.
