The primary read progression starts with the Z crosser working across the field, then works down to the underneath pivot or flat option if the crosser is taken away, with the running back as a checkdown valve if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a single high safety pre-snap, since this often signals man coverage underneath and the crosser will have a clean rub off the bunch traffic. If you see two safeties deep with linebackers sitting at a consistent depth, that is a zone shell, and the crosser needs to settle into the window behind the linebackers rather than trying to outrun the defense. Post-snap, key the MIKE linebacker's drop, since a user-controlled MIKE sitting in the middle of the field can jump the crosser and turn it into a pick six if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 3 with a hard-flowing linebacker to the crosser's side is the toughest coverage to beat with this concept, since the extra body clogs the shallow crossing lane and takes away the easy completion. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play thrives, since the bunch rub delays the trailing defender enough for the receiver to separate for a big gain across the middle.

Usage Tips

Identify pre-snap whether the defense is showing man or zone based on cornerback depth and safety rotation before the snap, since the crosser is the primary target versus man and the underneath options become more valuable versus zone.

Use motion or a quick glance at the linebacker alignment to confirm if there is a MIKE or WILL threat sitting in the crosser's lane, and if so, be ready to check down to the pivot route instead of forcing the throw.

This play excels on second and medium to third and short because the crosser needs time to develop and the underneath options give you a safe completion if the defense jumps the deep route.

Pair Z Cross with Mesh or Mesh Spot in your play-calling sequence since both attack similar crossing angles but from different depths, forcing defenders to guess and creating confusion for user linebackers trying to jump routes.

If the defense starts keying the crosser and jumping the route with a user linebacker, counter with Bunch Sail or Bunch Verts to attack vertically and punish overaggressive underneath coverage.
