Breakdown

Dig Return is a Bunch formation pass concept that shows a deep dig coming back across the field from the bunch, a corner route breaking outside vertically from the bunch stack, and a shallow drag or return route sitting underneath from the backside receiver. The route combo creates a natural high low read on the underneath zone defender while the corner route occupies the deep outside coverage, giving this a strong shot against zone coverage that leaves the middle of the field open. Primary read progression starts with the dig sitting down in the void, then works to the corner route if the safety bites underneath, with the shallow crosser as the checkdown against man coverage or blitz pressure.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap since a shallow drop signals he will not get enough width to jump the dig route. Key the safety over the bunch, if he stays flat footed and reads run first the dig will sit wide open in the intermediate zone. User the underneath zone defender manually to close the window on the dig, this is the single biggest counter to this concept. Man coverage with no help over the top gets exposed by the corner route, so a defender must be ready to sink and cut the dig before it crosses the field. Disguised zone blitzes that bring extra pressure off the edge can force the quarterback off his first read, so contain rushers should key the tackle to quarterback launch point.

Usage Tips

Look for two high safety shells pre-snap since the dig route thrives on defenders who sink into zone drops and open throwing lanes underneath.

Use motion out of the bunch to trigger man or zone coverage indicators before the snap so you know whether to prioritize the dig or the shallow crosser.

Hot route the backside receiver into a deeper crossing route if you diagnose Cover 3 to stress the deep middle void even further.

This play works best on second and medium to third and long since the dig needs time to develop and the sideline routes need room to operate.

Pair Dig Return with quicker Bunch concepts like Mesh Spot or Stick earlier in a series so the defense commits to shorter zone drops, opening the window for the dig on a later snap.
