Off the bunch, the outside receiver runs a corner route stretching the deep third, the middle receiver sits down on a spot route in the flat area over the ball, and the inside receiver climbs to the flag route working the vertical seam. On the backside, one receiver runs a deep dig while the running back releases into the flat, giving the quarterback a full-field progression from the spot route underneath to the corner and flag combo attacking the curl to flat defender and deep third rotation. The primary read starts with the spot route sitting down against zone, then works to the corner route if the defense rotates a safety over the top late.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, look at the cornerback depth over the bunch, soft coverage invites the quick spot route throw for an easy chain mover. Watch for a single high safety alignment, since that usually signals Cover 3 and opens the spot route window against the curl to flat defender. Post-snap, identify if a linebacker sinks into the spot route zone, this indicates a user lurking underneath and forces the quarterback to progress outside to the corner or flag route. Man coverage with press corners on the bunch can jam these route releases, so the spot route becomes tougher to sit down cleanly and the flag route becomes the better man beater option. If the defense shows a two-high shell that rotates late into Cover 1 or Cover 3, the backside dig route becomes the answer since the corner and flag combo gets squeezed by the rotating safety.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to medium since the spot route provides an easy sit down completion against zone coverage.

Check the pre-snap safety alignment, if you see two deep safeties shading toward the bunch, work the backside dig immediately since the corner and flag combo will be squeezed.

Against Cover 3, the spot route sits in the void left by the curl to flat defender so throw it as soon as the flat defender widens.

Pair Z Spot with Bunch Verts or PA Divide Wheels in your play calling sequence to punish defenses that key on the spot route sitting down every snap.

If the user drops a linebacker into the spot route window, hot route the flag route receiver to break outside sooner or lean on the backside dig as your second read.
