Breakdown

Inside Zone from Shotgun Bunch is a zone run play designed to attack the interior gaps with the bunch formation creating natural leverage and confusion on the edge defenders. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, sliding as a unit and reading defensive flow, allowing the HB to press the line and cut into whichever gap opens based on the defense's pursuit angles. Primary read progression starts with the frontside A gap, then bounces to the B gap or backside cutback if defenders overcommit to the initial flow, with the bunch alignment often pulling a defender out of the box pre-snap.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker depth before the snap since linebackers sitting at 4 to 5 yards can fill gaps faster and shut down the initial frontside read. Identify if the defense is running a 3-4 or 4-3 front, since 3-4 fronts with two-gapping defensive ends can clog the zone scheme and force an early cutback. Look for slanting defensive lines or a nano blitz off the edge, which can beat the zone blocking scheme before the HB reaches the line of scrimmage. Post-snap, track the play side linebacker's pursuit angle since overaggressive flow to the initial hole opens the cutback lane for a user-controlled HB. Man coverage shells with off-ball linebackers spying tend to bring extra run support, so expect a crowded box and be ready to bounce this outside if Cover 1 or Cover 0 is shown pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this against 6 or fewer defenders in the box since the bunch alignment often draws a defender out wide, creating a numbers advantage inside.

Use the right stick to manually control your HB and press the hole late, letting the zone blocking develop instead of committing to a gap too early.

Pair this with Bunch Verts or Bunch Sail on early downs to keep defenses honest and prevent them from selling out against the run with heavy fronts.

Attack second and short or first and ten situations where defenses are more likely to play base personnel instead of nickel or dime packages that speed up the second level.

If the defense shows a stacked box pre-snap, motion out of bunch or check into Read Option from this same set to force the defense to declare its edge defender's run fit.
