Breakdown

Y Lead Read Option lines up out of Shotgun Bunch with a bunch alignment to one side and the QB reading the mesh point with the HB on a zone read look. The offensive line executes an inside zone blocking scheme, sealing playside gaps while the Y (TE) works as a lead blocker through the hole to pick up the first defender in the alternate gap. This is a pure run play built around the QB reading an unblocked edge defender: give to the HB on the zone track if that defender crashes down, or pull and keep with the QB attacking the edge if he stays wide. Primary read progression is the read-key defender first, then the playside linebacker fit before deciding on give versus keep.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a defensive end or outside linebacker sitting unblocked outside the tackle, that is your designated read-key defender for the option decision. Check linebacker depth before the snap, stacked and shallow linebackers signal a run blitz that can beat this play if the Y lead block whiffs. If the safety rotates down into the box pre-snap, expect an extra run fitter and lean toward keeping with the QB to attack the edge before the alley fills. Post-snap, track whether the edge defender crashes hard on the HB mesh, a hard crash means pull the ball and get vertical with the QB immediately. This run scheme is vulnerable to scrape exchange calls where the linebacker replaces the crashing edge defender, so recognize the exchange and be ready to cut the HB run back inside if the alley closes.

Usage Tips

Identify the read-key defender before the snap by checking if the defense has a true edge player left unblocked outside the tackle box.

Use this against light boxes (six defenders or fewer) since the Y lead block gives you a numbers advantage at the point of attack.

If the defense shows a hard crash-and-scrape look on film, hot route the Y to insert quicker into the alternate gap to seal the backside linebacker.

Pair this with Inside Zone and Cheat Inside Zone earlier in a drive so defenders start keying run fits, then hit this same look against an aggressive edge defender for an easy QB keep.

Best called on early downs (first and ten, second and short) to keep defenses honest and set up play-action shots off the same Bunch formation like PA Cheat Divide Wheels or PA Post later in the series.

Avoid calling this into a stacked box with nine defenders since the Y lead block alone cannot handle extra second-level defenders flowing hard downhill.
