Breakdown

Philly Post out of Shotgun Bunch aligns three receivers tight to one side with the backfield running back staying in to help protect. Off the snap the outside bunch receiver breaks vertically and cuts hard toward the post, while the two inside bunch receivers work an under combo that crosses back toward the formation at different depths, giving you a high low read against zone drops. This is a man beater first, since the post window opens up huge when the defense is forced to work through natural rub traffic at the release, but the crossing unders also give you answers versus soft zone shells. Primary progression starts with the deep post from the bunch, then works down to the shallow crosser sitting underneath if the post window is capped.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a single high safety pre snap, that alignment tells you the post has a clean throwing lane over the top of the bunch. If the defense shows man coverage with the corner aligned tight to the bunch, expect natural rub and pick opportunities off the release that spring the post open early. Read the linebacker depth at the snap, shallow drops mean the underneath crosser will be crowded and you should climb the ladder to the post immediately. Be aware of user controlled defenders lurking in the middle of the field, since a smart user can sit on the post breakpoint and bait the throw for a turnover. Cover 3 with a sky safety rotating hard to the bunch side is the biggest threat to this concept, since it takes away both the post and the shallow crosser in the same rep.

Usage Tips

Check the pre snap alignment of the safety over the bunch, if he is cheating outside or shows two high shell the post has room to work behind him.

Use the hot route feature to slide the shallow crosser into a hook or sit route against zone heavy defenses that like to sink linebackers under the post.

This play excels on 2nd and medium to long or 1st down shot calls when you want to attack a single high safety before he can rotate over the top.

Pair Philly Post with Bunch Verts or Bunch Sail in your play calling sequence, since the same bunch alignment threatens verticals and flood concepts and forces the defense to guess run fits versus pass drops.

Against man coverage, motion is not needed but user the post receiver's release to sell the vertical stem before breaking, since defenders that jump the route early get beat instantly.
