Defensive Reads

Watch for Cover 4 shells with both safeties deep and corners playing outside leverage on the bunch, this play is built to punish that look by using the vertical to hold safeties while the drive route settles into the vacated middle zone. If you see man coverage with a linebacker or nickel corner shaded over the bunch, the drive route creates natural traffic that can spring wide open against tight man technique. Be wary of Cover 2 Man under, since the underneath defenders can sit on the drive route and the drag route runner can get squeezed at the catch point. Key the weakside linebacker or nickel defender's initial drop, if he sprints to cover the drag immediately the defense may be in a pattern match zone that will also account for the drive route. A disguised blitz off the bunch side can disrupt the timing of this route concept, so check for walked up defenders near the line before the snap and be ready to get the ball out quickly on the drag if pressure comes free.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap peek at the safety alignment, if both safeties sit deep and the corners are aligned outside the bunch, expect Cover 4 and target the drive route working across the middle since the vertical will occupy the safeties. Use the drag route as your built-in checkdown against zone blitzes or when the pass rush forces an early throw, it works well on second and medium or third and short. Hot route the backside drag into a deeper crosser if you are facing a heavy Cover 2 shell to clear out underneath defenders. Pair this play with Bunch Verts in your play-calling sequence to keep defenses honest on the vertical shot, then come back to Flanker Drive once the defense starts jumping the seam route. Combine with Bunch Sail on the following snap to attack the sideline if the defense starts sitting on the drive route in the middle of the field.
