Breakdown

Flanker Drive out of Shotgun Bunch lines up three receivers tight to one side with a lone receiver backside. The bunch releases with one receiver running a deep vertical up the numbers while another runs a drive route underneath, crossing the field low and away from the bunch, and the third works a shallow drag across the formation opposite the drive. This is a Cover 4 beater built on route combos that stress the seams and underneath zones, so the primary read is the drive route working across the middle for the sit-down window before progressing to the deep vertical if a safety bites down.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two deep safeties splitting the field evenly pre-snap, which signals Cover 4 and tells you the drive route will have room to settle in the intermediate window. Key the flow of the linebackers after the snap, since a hard flow toward the bunch side opens the drag route running away from traffic. If corners are playing tight man press on the bunch receivers, expect a rerouted release that can disrupt timing on the drive and drag routes, so be ready to adjust your first read. Look for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, since that defender can jump the drive route if he reads the quarterback's eyes early. Man coverage with underneath help shuts this concept down fastest, so if you see press corners with linebackers spying the middle of the field, lean toward the deep vertical instead of forcing the drive route.

Usage Tips

Identify Cover 4 pre-snap by checking safety depth and corner alignment on the bunch side, since this play is built specifically to exploit that shell.

Use the deep vertical as a clock-killer against single high looks, forcing the safety to declare before you commit to the drive route underneath.

Hot route the drag route into a spot or option route if you see man coverage sniffing the bunch release, since the crossing action alone is enough to shake off tight man defenders.

Pair this play with Bunch Verts or Bunch Sail in your call sheet to keep defenses guessing between vertical shots and the intermediate drive concept out of the same bunch look.

Best used on second or third and medium, when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells like Cover 4 or Cover 3 that this drive concept is designed to punish.
