Breakdown

Corner Out Dig runs three routes from the Bunch alignment: the outside receiver runs an out breaking hard to the sideline, the middle bunch receiver climbs vertically before snapping into a corner route toward the boundary, and the tight end works a deep dig across the middle of the field. The running back releases out of the backfield on a swing/wheel route to the flat, giving the quarterback a checkdown against blitz pressure. This is a man beater concept built off natural bunch rub routes, with the primary progression working corner to dig to the out, and the running back as the final outlet.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, identify the safety alignment first, a single high safety struggles to cover both the corner and the dig if the quarterback reads it correctly. Watch the corner and slot corner depth at the snap, if they sink hard to protect against verticals the underneath out and dig will be wide open. Post snap, key any user controlled defender dropping into the middle of the field, a rover or lurk defender sitting on the dig route can bait the quarterback into a turnover. This concept struggles against two high shells like 4 verticals coverage shells or Cover 2 because the corner route runs directly into the deep half defender. Watch for linebacker depth on the dig route, if the linebacker sits shallow and reads the quarterback eyes he can jump the throwing lane and undercut the route.

Usage Tips

Attack single high safety shells since the corner route stresses the deep third and forces the safety to pick a man before he can help over the top of the dig.

Use the bunch alignment to create natural traffic against man coverage, the tight rub at the top of the routes makes it hard for defenders to stay attached through the break points.

Hot route the running back into a pure flat route if you expect a blitz, this gives you an instant answer against nano blitzes and overload pressure.

Best called on second and medium to long or third and long when you need a full field stretch and have time for the corner and dig to develop downfield.
