Breakdown

Inside Cross out of Shotgun Bunch aligns three receivers tight to one side with a lone receiver split away. From the bunch, the outside man runs a deep corner route to clear space, the middle receiver runs a deep crossing route working from one side of the field to the other, and the inside bunch receiver runs a shallow drag underneath heading the opposite direction. The backside single receiver runs a deep in breaking route sitting behind the crosser. This is a man beater built on natural rub picks at the snap: the crosser and drag work off each other to shake trailing defenders in man coverage, while the corner route occupies the deep outside defender. Primary read progression starts with the shallow drag for an instant answer versus blitz, then works to the deep crosser as the true first read against man coverage, and finally climbs to the deep in route if the crosser gets picked off downfield.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safeties, since a lone deep safety often signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 which struggles to match the crosser and drag combo. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into deep zone drops instead of playing underneath, the shallow drag will be wide open for an easy completion. Post-snap, track any user controlled defender lurking in the middle of the field, a spot dropping linebacker or safety sitting on the crosser can jump the route and create a turnover opportunity. Against zone coverage look for the deep in route sitting behind the crosser in the void created by cover 3 flat defenders, this is often the counter read when the crosser is taken away. If the defense shows a heavy blitz look with the bunch side unaccounted for, the drag route becomes an instant answer since it releases quickly into the vacated underneath area.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion out of the bunch to identify man versus zone before the snap, if a defender follows the motion man it confirms man coverage and you can lock onto the deep crosser as your primary read.

Against man coverage, trust the natural rub from the bunch alignment to spring the crosser open, especially versus press man or Cover 1 where the shallow drag and crosser create traffic for trailing defenders.

Hot route the drag into a quick option route or check it down against pressure since it is your fastest developing throw and doubles as a blitz beater on third and short.

Pair this play with Bunch Sail or Bunch Verts in the same set so the defense has to respect both the deep shot and the intermediate crossing concept, forcing linebackers to hesitate on crash reads.

Best called on second or third and medium when you need a defined high value throw, since the deep crosser and deep in route both work well beyond the sticks.
