Breakdown

Speed Dig aligns out of Shotgun Bunch with 11 personnel and attacks the field with a three level stretch. The outside receiver runs a deep dig that breaks hard across the middle, the bunch receiver on the point runs a corner route that clears the boundary, and the third bunch receiver works a deep in cutting away from traffic, while the backside X runs a vertical clear out. The HB releases into the boundary on a check release wheel or scat route out of the backfield for a checkdown option underneath. This is a man beater built off the dig sitting down in the void created by the corner route pulling coverage vertically, and the primary read progression starts with the deep dig, moves to the corner if the defense rotates late, and comes down to the HB on the throwaway option if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify the free safety depth, if he is shaded to the bunch side expect a Cover 3 rotation that will try to sink underneath the dig, so throw it with anticipation before the linebacker gets to his landmark. Watch for a nickel or slot defender jumping the dig route out of a zone drop, this is the classic lurk threat that Speed Dig is vulnerable to in Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells. Against man coverage, key the cornerback on the corner route, if he turns his hips too early to run vertically that opens the window for the dig sitting underneath. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge will collapse the pocket before the dig fully develops, so check protection or plan to get the HB checkdown out quickly if you see a nano blitz alignment pre snap. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can squeeze the dig throwing lane, look for the safety rotating over the top to jump the route and bait a pick if the quarterback throws it late.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells pre snap since the dig sits perfectly in the void behind Cover 3 sink drops and in front of Cover 1 deep help.

Motion the bunch to check for man coverage rotation before the snap, if a defender follows the motion man you are getting man principles and the dig will win hard against off man or trail technique.

Hot route the HB from a wheel to a flat route against zone heavy defenses to speed up the checkdown timing and beat underneath robbers.

Pair this play with Bunch Verts or Bunch Sail in the same set to keep the defense honest, since both plays hit the same bunch alignment but attack different levels and force the safety to guess.

Best called on second and medium to second and long, the deep dig needs time to develop so avoid using it on third and short when the defense sits on quick underneath throws.
