Quick Reference

Breakdown

Zona Bunch is a zone beating concept out of the Shotgun Bunch formation designed to attack soft spots between the underneath and deep defenders. The bunch alignment creates natural rub release conflicts for zone defenders trying to sort out who has which route, with staggered depths that stretch the field horizontally and vertically at the same time. Primary read progression starts with the shallow crosser or flat route out of the bunch, works to the intermediate breaking route in the void, then climbs to the deep route on the backside if the underneath zones widen out.

Defensive Reads

Look at the safety depth and spacing pre snap, two deep safeties splitting the field usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone drops that this concept is designed to exploit. Watch the flow of the underneath linebackers after the snap, if they widen with the bunch release you have a throwing lane in the middle hook zone. Identify a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane, since a user controlled defender jumping that route will erase your first read and force you to the intermediate window. Man coverage with press corners on the bunch receivers is the toughest matchup for this play, expect rerouting and trail technique that disrupts the natural rub separation. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can speed up your clock before the deeper routes develop, so know your checkdown or hot route answer against pressure looks before the snap.

Usage Tips

Check pre snap for two high shells versus single high, this play is built to punish Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone drops where the bunch traffic clogs zone assignments. Use the flat or shallow route as your quick trigger read on third and short, then progress to the sitting route in the intermediate zone window on second and medium. Motion a bunch receiver before the snap to force the defense to declare zone or man rotation, giving you a clean pre snap key. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose man coverage, since the base concept is built more for zone voids than for beating tight man leverage. Pair this call with Bunch Verts or Bunch Sail earlier in a drive so the defense respects the vertical shots, then come back to Zona Bunch to sit in the softened zones underneath.
