The two inside bunch receivers cross underneath in a mesh at the same depth to rub off man defenders while the outside bunch receiver runs a spot route, sitting down over the middle after a quick angle. The backside single receiver clears vertically up the sideline as a deep outlet, and the running back releases to the flat as a check-down safety valve. This is a man beater first and foremost thanks to the mesh traffic, though the spot concept underneath also gives it answers against sinking zone linebackers. Primary read progression starts with the mesh crossers working left to right, then works to the spot sitting in the shallow hole, and finishes with the running back in the flat or the go route if a corner bites late.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with corners lined up tight on the bunch receivers, since that is when the mesh crossers will hit hardest. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into zone drops the spot route will still find a soft window underneath. Key any user-controlled defender flowing toward the mesh point, a good user lurk defender can sit in the crossing lanes and jump the shallow routes. Look for Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with safeties staying deep, that tells you the spot and flat combo underneath will be open before the mesh fully develops. Beware disguised blitzes off the edge since the running back's flat route becomes a critical release valve if the mesh takes too long to separate.

Trust the mesh combination against any man coverage look and let the crossers create natural picks before working through your progression. Use the spot route as your safety valve against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells since it settles right in the shallow hook window. Hot route the running back to a flat route or check him down if the protection is overwhelmed on a blitz look. This play shines on third and short to medium since the mesh rub and spot combo consistently create quick separation. Pair this with Bunch Verts or PA Divide Wheels earlier in a drive so defenses respect the vertical shot, then come back to Mesh Spot to punish aggressive man coverage or overplayed zone drops. Snap it quickly against Cover 0 or man blitz calls since the mesh traffic disrupts man defenders in their tracks.
