Cheat Inside Zone runs out of Shotgun Bunch with the bunch receivers off the line and the run hitting the inside zone track behind the offensive line. The line flows in unison to create a natural cutback lane while the running back reads the frontside double teams before pressing to daylight, making this a pure zone run play with no route combo to speak of since the receivers are not part of the design read. Primary read progression is frontside gap to backside cutback lane, letting the O-line movement dictate whether the back presses front or bends back across the formation.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth and gap alignment before the snap since stacked or crashing linebackers signal a run blitz that this play struggles against. Key the defensive tackles at the snap, if they get vertical push and collapse the frontside gap, the back needs to cutback immediately rather than forcing it forward. Look for user controlled defenders flowing hard downhill on the snap, as an aggressive user linebacker can blow up the play if the cutback lane is not there. This play beats light boxes and teams that sub out for nickel or dime personnel since it exploits fewer bodies at the point of attack. Use this on early downs like first and second down to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action shots later in the drive. If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, consider hot routing a receiver to a quick out or slant as an outlet rather than forcing the run into a stacked box.
